How to Remove Lichens & Moss From Asphalt Roof Shingles

Moss and lichen tend to accumulate in damp, shaded areas. In many cases, these two characteristics aptly describe the conditions found on an asphalt-shingled roof. When moss and lichen invade your roof and turn it into an eyesore, however, there is a simple and straightforward solution that takes only a few hours to complete. This homemade solution is inexpensive, yet highly effective at removing the moss and lichen and restoring the roof.

Things You'll Need

  • Pump sprayer
  • Funnel
  • Water
  • Bleach
  • Drop cloths
  • Push broom
  • Garden hose

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove the screw-cap on the top of a pump sprayer and set it to the side.

      Fit a funnel into the opening of the pump sprayer and carefully pour equal parts household bleach and water into the tank of the sprayer.

      Remove the funnel and screw the cap back onto the top of the sprayer.

      Pump the sprayer as instructed in the user manual so that it is ready for use.

      Cover shrubs and vegetation at the side of your house with drop cloths to prevent harming them during application.

      Brush down the asphalt shingles with a push broom to lift up any loose moss and lichen.

      Spray the bleach and water solution onto the roof with long, even strokes until you have covered the entire surface.

      Wait 12 to 15 minutes for the bleach to break up the moss and lichen and then spray down the roof with a garden hose to remove the bleach solution and remaining moss and lichen.
