How to Fire Retard a Wooden Roof

Wooden roofs can add a rustic look to your home. Cedar shingles do have their drawbacks, however. As the wood begins to dry over time, it can become a serious fire hazard. Short of replacing you roof, you can do a few things to help lessen the chances of your wooden roof igniting and potentially ruining your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a ladder against the side of your house. Put on a pair of work gloves. Climb the ladder and clean out all the debris in your rain gutters. Leaves and sticks caught in the gutters are additional fire hazards that should be removed frequently. Wash the gutters out with a garden hose once they are cleared of debris.

    • 2

Clean off any loose debris on top of the roof itself. Pick up any leaves, sticks, branches, or anything else that is resting on the roof. This debris is an additional fire hazard and will also prevent you from properly spraying the roof later. Use a broom to clean off hard-to-reach areas of the roof.

    • 3

Use your hose to wash off any dirt or stuck-on debris on the roof. Let the roof dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

    • 4

Purchase a fire retardant wood roof chemical from a home improvement store. Check the product label to make sure it is the right chemical for the cedar on your roof.

    • 5

Put on a pair of safety glasses and a dust mask. Pour the fire retardant chemical into a garden sprayer or paint sprayer. Dilute with water if required by the product instructions.

    • 6

Climb back up the ladder and coat the entire roof with the chemical. Work in small sections so you do not forget which areas you've already sprayed. Allow the chemical to dry for the recommended amount of time on the product instructions.

    • 7

Apply another coat of the fire retardant chemical once the first coat is dry.
