How to Tie New Roof Shingles Into Existing Ones

Roof shingles protect the wood sheathing on your roof from water and falling debris that may cause damage and leaks. Blowing wind, sharp sticks and other phenomenon might cause damage to your shingles. You can't rip up an entire roof every time there is damage, but you can replace single pieces by tying them into your existing roof shingles. This repair does not require a professional, but do be aware you need to work at height. Always work on days with calm weather, wearing slip-resistant shoes.

Instructions

    • 1

Slip a pry bar underneath the damaged shingle. Press down on the end of the pry bar to lift up the roofing nails holding the shingle in place.

    • 2

Take the shingle with you to a shingle supplier. They will help match the new shingle to your old ones.

    • 3

Slide the new shingle in place.

    • 4

Lift up the bottom of the shingle above the empty location and slide the new one underneath. Be careful not to crack the shingle. If the shingle above is brittle, cut four v-notches into the top of the new shingle and slide the new shingle into the gap, aligning the v-notches with the old nails.

    • 5

Pound four 1 1/4 inch roofing nails, evenly spaced, along the bottom of the shingle.
