How to Apply Gravel to Asphalt Oil

When a flat roof is constructed for a home or a garage, the surface is sealed by applying gravel and asphalt oil, or tar. When a flat roof requires repairs because of leaks, the old roof needs to be rebuilt and new tar and gravel added.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and length of the roof with the tape measure. Multiply the width by the length to obtain the square footage to determine how much gravel and tar are needed to cover the roof.

    • 2

Pour the tar onto a small section of the roof and spread it evenly with the trowel. Lay the felt paper on top of the tar.

    • 3

Move to the next section of the roof. Pour the tar and lay the felt paper in place. Repeat this step to cover the roof with one layer of tar and felt paper.

    • 4

Repeat this process to lay two to three layers of tar and felt paper on the roof. Offset the sections of tar and felt paper to cover any seams.

    • 5

Pour the final layer of tar in a 3-by-3-foot area. Apply the crushed gravel evenly to cover all of the tar. Repeat this step to apply a layer of crushed gravel to the roof.
