How Can I Stop a Wood Roof Leaking From Snow

During the winter months, snow can sit on a wood-shingled roof for hours, even days. This allows the water to sit in place and soak through the wood shingles. The water then seeps through the felt or tar paper underneath the shingles, and then leaks into your home. Roof leaks will deteriorate your ceiling and drywall, and devalue your home. To prevent this, seal the top of the wood shingles.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the ladder against the side of the house near the roof. Bring the roof sealant and a paintbrush with you.

    • 2

Look for the area of the roof that is leaking. Often this area is discolored.

    • 3

Open the bucket or can of roof sealant.

    • 4

Apply the roof sealant to the leaking area with a paintbrush. Spread the sealant at least one foot into the immediate area in all directions. Cover both the wood shingles and tar with the sealant. Then allow 15 to 20 minutes for it to dry.

Apply a second and even third coat of sealant after the first has dried.
