How to Make a Roof Flashing

Most roofs have areas where water collects, such as chimneys, walls and valleys along the roof. Since these areas are more susceptible to leaks, they need extra protection. Roof flashing consists of pieces of metal installed along the roof to protect the felt and boards underneath the roof shingles from excessive moisture. Installing flashing in weak areas will make your roof stronger without excessive cost. Flashing also can be used to patch leaks that have appeared along the roof.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the roof flashing to the correct size for the valley or area in which you are installing the flashing using a pair of tin snips. Use step flashing, which has an L-shape, along walls so that one part of the flashing is on the roof and the other part against the wall.

    • 2

Apply a thin bead of concrete adhesive to the back of the flashing.

    • 3

Place the flashing on the lowest part of the installation area. Pound two roofing nails, evenly spaced, on each end of the flashing to hold it down.

    • 4

Apply concrete adhesive to the underside of the next piece of flashing. Overlap the second piece of flashing by two inches over the first piece and nail it down.

    • 5

Apply adhesive to the shingle you wish to place over the flashing and press down. Nail the shingle as you have the rest on the roof.
