How to Box Open Eaves

Generally, the roof of a building sticks out over the sides of it. The eaves are those exposed areas under the roof edge, between it and the sides of the building. Particularly, in locations where high winds can cause significant structural damage, it makes sense to box-in the eaves, so the wind cannot get under the roof edge and detach shingles. If you live in a location where wildfires are also a risk, you should box-in the eaves to prevent stray embers getting into the eaves and causing a potential major fire. It will also add insulation and prevent heat loss and detract squirrels, rats and other unwanted pests from entering your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your home to calculate how much soffit board and how many F-channels and J-channels you will need.

    • 2

Fasten F-channels to the wall under the roofline all around the building. Fasten them with 3/4-inch wood screws and place them about 18 inches apart. The F-channels will hold the soffit board.

    • 3

Attach J-channels to your fascia board if it does not have grooves in it. These will provide a groove into which to slot the soffit board.

    • 4

Slot the soffit board into the F-channels and fascia grooves or J-channels.

    • 5

Attach fascia caps to the exposed ends of any fascia boards.
