How to Fill Holes in a Tin Roof

When properly installed and maintained, a tin roof provides years of protection for your home, garage or storage building. Defects in material, hailstones or adverse weather conditions can cause small rust spots to grow into holes over time. Rather than replace an entire roofing panel when you discover a hole, it is usually possible to perform a simple, permanent repair in less than an hour with a few basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of sheet tin large enough to overlap the hole by 2 inches on each side, using tin snips.

    • 2

Remove any rust or loose material surrounding the hole with a wire brush. Clean the area as thoroughly as possible to provide the best bonding surface.

    • 3

Apply a thin, even layer of flux to the bottom side of the patch with a flux brush.

    • 4

Put the patch in place over the hole.

    • 5

Place a soldering iron on top of one corner of the patch. Heat the patch until the solder melts when applied to the seam between the patch and the roof.

    • 6

Move the soldering iron slowly around the circumference of the patch until all sides are soldered in place.
