How to Clear a Roof Full of Snow

Clearing a roof of heavy snowfall is important in areas of the country where the accumulation may cause the roof to collapse. Ridding the roof of snow is a strenuous activity. It also can be dangerous if you do not use proper tools. A ladder may fall because of slippery snow or ice, and the wrong tool can damage your roof and shingles. Roofs are designed to tolerate different weights of snow loads. Some homeowner policies do not cover the damage resulting from too much snow.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on heavy work boots with a good tread that grips well.

    • 2

Dress warmly by wearing layers of clothing. The proper clothing and shoes prevents you from getting frostbite.

    • 3

Pick a roof rake that has a long handle.

    • 4

Lift the roof rake so it reaches the highest point of the roof, then lower it to touch the roof.

    • 5

Hold the roof rake with both hands with your arms toward one side of your body. This prevents the heavy snow from falling directly on you while clearing the roof.

    • 6

Clear the snow with a downward pull. This helps prevent the shingles from breaking because you are pulling in the direction they lie. Take a break and go indoors to warm up if you feel fatigued or chilled. Repeat the downward pulls until the entire roof is clear.
