How to Repair Holes & Rust on a Coleman Camper Roof

The Coleman camper trailer makes traveling easy and convenient. The trailer is designed to collapse into a small-framed box that is easy to pull behind the car and then easy to set up when you reach your destination. Popup camper trailers, however, experience lots of abuse from the natural elements as well as general wear and tear. The metal parts of the roof are subject to rusting because of rain and moisture and the vinyl or canvas parts of the roof may suffer from small holes or punctures. Repairing rusted areas and patching holes is something that you can do yourself as long as the problem is not too severe.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the roof with water and a sponge. Avoid detergents and bleaches because this could cause the canvas to fade. Cleaning the roof gets rid of dirt, grime and debris, making it easier to see the extent of the damage. A clean roof is also easier to repair

Sand the rusted areas with sandpaper and steel wool. It is necessary to remove the rust before it spreads and causes more damage. Sand the rusted areas until the bare metal is exposed. Dust the area with a soft bristle brush to remove sanding residue and dust.

Cover the exposed metal areas with a rust-inhibiting primer. Purchase the primer at an auto parts store or paint store. The primer may be applied with a brush or spray. Rust-inhibiting primers are available in aerosol sprays. If you are using an aerosol primer it is necessary to cover and protect the surrounding areas from over spray. Apply one or two layers of primer and allow the primer to completely dry. Apply a top coat of paint for extra protection.

Purchase a canvas or vinyl patching kit to repair the holes in the camper top. A variety of canvas and vinyl patching materials are available for camper roof repair. The canvas patches are sewn on and the vinyl patches are are secured with an adhesive.

Cut the patch to fit the hole. A vinyl patch should be 2 to 2.5 inches larger than the diameter of the hole and a canvas patch should be 1.5 to 2 inches larger than the diameter of the hole. Apply an adhesive to the back of the vinyl patch with the applicator that comes with the kit. Place the patch over the hole and press it firmly down. Apply pressure for two to three minutes to help the patch to bond to the surrounding surface. Stitch the canvas patch using a zigzag weaving pattern for more strength and security.
