How to Clear a Snow-covered Roof

Snow presents multiple hazards to a roof and home. One danger, especially on flat roofs, is that heavy snow may cause a roof to collapse under the pressure.      Stand on the ground near the roof. Extend the handle of a plastic roof rake, so that it allows you to reach the roof with the rake.

     Hold the long handle of the rake and pull down sections of snow from the roof. Start near the roof edges and work back, raking the snow down to the ground.

     Leave the bottom layer of snow on the roof, so that you don't risk damaging the roof as you clear the snow. Rake off the snow that covers any roof vents.
