How to Melt Sulfur Molding

Have you ever heard the saying, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure?” With winter coming, and roof repair becoming a priority, what better way to rescue our pockets and fix the roof than using discarded plastic moldings stashed away in the basement? If your roof has cracks wider than several inches, this method might not work. But for smaller crevices in the roof or gutters, you can melt your sulfur moldings, and fill the gap with the melted sulfur.

Instructions

  1. Melting Sulfur Molding

    • 1

Cut the sulfur molding into pieces using a saw.

    • 2

Set the burner and the heating plate outdoors to create sufficient ventilation, or wear a respiratory mask to avoid breathing the fumes. Be aware that sulfurous fumes are poisonous and dangerous even when inhaled for brief periods of time. Make sure you wear gloves to prevent contact with hot liquids.

    • 3

Place the sulfur pieces into a large pot set on a heating plate.

    • 4

Increase the initial temperature to approximately 140 degrees Celsius. Keep stirring the sulfur molding pieces to avoid burning the sulfur material in the center of the pot.

    • 5

Expect 10 to 15 minutes of melting time. Sulfur is completely melted when it appears fully liquid.
