How to Fix a Cracked Roof Tile

Although extremely durable, roof tiles are susceptible to cracks caused by fallen tree limbs, moisture penetration and freeze-thaw cycles. Carelessly walking on roof tiles can also make them crack. Aside from appearing unsightly, cracked roof tiles are defective, as they may leak moisture indoors. Neglecting to repair cracked roof tiles allows roof battens to rot and puts a home’s overall structural integrity at risk. Promptly fix a cracked roof tile to protect your home and avoid costly damages.

Instructions

    • 1

Prop a durable ladder against the roof and then hook the ladder onto the roof’s ridge using roof hooks. Access the ladder while wearing non-slip rubber-soled shoes.

    • 2

Access the cracked roof tile from the ladder, if possible. If it's necessary to stand on the roof, stand on a durable sheet of plywood to evenly distribute your weight.

    • 3

Wedge a block of wood underneath the intact tile directly above the cracked one. Propping up this tile permits you to access the cracked tile.

    • 4

Scrub the cracked portion of the roof tile with a wire brush. Loosen all debris from the tile's surface.

    • 5

Scoop a dollop of plastic roofing cement on a trowel. Evenly spread the cement along the cracked section of the roof tile. Don’t apply the cement too thick, but rather apply a 1/8-inch thick layer.

    • 6

Let the patched roof tile thoroughly air dry.
