My Roof Ridge Vent Is Loose

A roof ridge vent provides ventilation to your home through the roof and attic. A loose or damaged vent may lead to moisture problems that affect the insulation, which can cause mold and other problems within the home. It is necessary to perform routine maintenance checks of your roof to make sure that the roof ridge vent is securely in place and functioning appropriately.
  1. Checking the Vent

    • Roofing professionals recommend that homeowners check their roofs at least once annually for damage. It is necessary to physically inspect the ridge vent, so you will need to get up on the roof. This vent usually runs along the length of the roof on the highest peak. Gently pull the ridge vent upward in order to inspect the fasteners. Tighten and replace any that appear loose or are missing. Also check for proper installation. Ridge vent fasteners go into the rafters at approximately every 18 inches.

    Longer Fasteners

    • A roof ridge vent is designed to work with wind and air flow to ventilate the roof and attic of your home. A certain amount of flexibility is desired to perform this task. However, too much and it will cause more harm than good, so the vent needs to be secure. Roof ridge vents are sometimes installed using general roofing nails that are too short to reach through to the rafters. These nails generally do not secure the vent in place enough to ensure proper functionality. Professional roofers recommend using screws that are long enough to securely penetrate the rafters, such as 3-inch galvanized deck screws.

    Sealing

    • The roof ridge vent is intended to be open to allow for air flow, but it is still necessary to seal the areas around the fasteners. To prevent roof leaks, use a polyurethane sealant on the roof ridge fasteners. This sealant also aids in securing the ridge vent in place by giving added strength to the fasteners. If the roof ridge vent on your home is covered with shingles, check these for cracks and apply any roofing tar as needed.

    Safety

    • Work carefully when on the roof. By definition, the ridge vent is at the very top of the roof and may require special scaffolding for safe access. Be careful not to scuff or mar the shingles as you move around on the roof.
