How to Change a Damaged Drip Edge

A drip edge is a type of flashing: a metal angle that covers weak spots in a roof covering. Roofers install a drip edge over fascia boards along a roof's perimeter at both the horizontal eaves and sloped rakes. The bottom side of a drip edge angle juts outward like a lip to direct water away from roofing materials. Although changing a damaged drip edge is relatively simple, the project requires considerable prying and pulling.

Instructions

    • 1

Set an extension ladder against the side of the roof that you are working on. Place the ladder's feet on a firm surface and lock the feet in position. Climb the ladder to access the damaged drip edge. Slip a pry bar between the drip edge and the roof shingles. Lift the shingles with the pry bar.

    • 2

Wedge an object, such as a hammer, between the roof deck and the shingles to hold the shingles away from the roof's surface. Inspect the portion of the roof edge that sits beneath the shingles. If the roof edge is bound to the roof deck with caulk or sealant, cut through the caulk or sealant with a utility knife.

    • 3

Slide the pry bar between the drip edge and roof deck. Latch the pry bar's notch around the shank of a roofing nail that fastens the drip edge to the roof deck. Rock, pry and pull the pry bar to loosen the nail.

    • 4

Remove the bar from beneath the drip edge and use the curved end of the bar to pull the nail from the roof deck. Remove adjacent nails with the pry bar. Lift shingles and remove nails along the remaining length of the drip edge. Slide the drip edge away from the roof. Cut the replacement drip edge to length with snips.

    • 5

Slide the replacement drip edge beneath the shingles. Beginning at one end of the drip edge, lift a shingle and use a hammer to drive a roofing nail through the drip edge and into the roof deck. Fasten the drip edge with nails every 12 to 18 inches.
