How to Fix a Condensing Steel Roof

Water can cause serious damage to your home my rotting furniture and walls, causing mold growth, which can result in health issues, and rusting and corroding your steel roof. Condensation is one form of water damage that ranges from insignificant drips every few days to water running down your walls from the roof. Condensation occurs when moisture gathers on the metal surface, and the air is not able to evaporate it. Metal doesn’t absorb condensation as readily as other materials do, but you should still eliminate it to avoid other issues water damage can cause.

Instructions

    • 1

Fix your home’s ventilation system to make it as efficient as possible. Keep it on during the day to eliminate moisture throughout your home. Newer homes that are tighter have less air circulation and are often unable to evaporate the condensation.

    • 2

Run bathroom fans when you are showering or taking a bath. Both produce a lot of moisture that can significantly raise the humidity in your home and prevent condensation from evaporating.

    • 3

Install a dehumidifier if the condensation occurs. Install it as close to your roof as aesthetically and physically possible. This will help dry out the condensation.

    • 4

Install a vapor barrier between your metal roof and the rest of your home if the condensation continues. These vapor barriers are made of gypsum board and act like a coaster in protecting your home from condensation on the metal roof. They will also help insulate the area between the roof and your home so the temperature change isn't as drastic, which will help prevent condensation from forming.
