How to Thaw a Frozen Roof Vent

Thawing a frozen roof vent is an uncomfortable and dangerous job because of the freezing temperatures and the use of a ladder in icy conditions. Moisture-filled exhaust comes out the roof vents via the plumbing or heating system. Condensation sometimes builds up on the vent and forms an ice block during freezing temperatures. An indication that your roof vent requires thawing is an odor of sewer gas in your home. Other signs are a toilet that does not flush efficiently or a gurgling noise in your pipes.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug a powerful hair dryer into an extension cord suitable for outdoor use.

    • 2

Position a ladder near the area where the roof vent is located. Ask an assistant to hold the ladder while you attempt to thaw the vent. This provides an extra measure of safety and also ensures that, if you fall, someone is there to help you quickly.

    • 3

Climb the ladder taking the hair dryer with you.

    • 4

Turn on the hair dryer to the highest setting, and direct the hot air to the roof vent.

    • 5

Move the hair dryer back and forth slowly along the blockage area until the ice thaws enough that you can remove it by hand.
