How to Fix a Crack in a Tile Roof

Tile roofs are commonly used through the Southwest, as they derive their design from the old Spanish missions. Although tiles resist weather well, it doesn’t take much force to crack one. Left unrepaired, a cracked tile can result in water leaks in the roof. It is for this reason that you should repair a cracked tile as soon as reasonably possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a piece of scrap wood underneath the tile above the cracked tile to increase the work space and to expose the damaged tile’s securing nail.

    • 2

Break the damaged tile apart with a hammer while wearing safety glasses for eye protection. A few gentle taps will probably be sufficient.

    • 3

Pry the tile nail out of the roof with a pry bar, and sweep the tile fragments out of the cavity in the roof.

    • 4

Position a tile clip onto the roof, and position the replacement tile within the clip. The hooked end of the clip is designed to hold the bottom of the tile. Move the clip and tile until the bottom of the tile is level with the bottom of the adjoining tiles. Hold the clip in place and remove the tile.

    • 5

Drive a roofing nail through the nail hole at the top of the tile clip and into the roof with a hammer to secure the clip in place.

    • 6

Position the new tile onto the roofing clip, ensuring that the bottom of the tile rests securely against the hook at the bottom of the clip.

    • 7

Remove the wood piece and gently lower the above tile over the top of the new tile.
