What Is Roofing Cement?

Roof cement is a first-line defense material against leaks and water damage in the home. The kind of cement used will vary slightly from job to job, but key ingredients of asphalt roof cement are solvent-based bitumen, mineral stabilizers and other materials, possibly even asbestos. Since the roof of a house is the primary barrier between a home and the elements, proper use of roof cement is necessary to ensure family safety and asset protection.
  1. Uses

    • Roofing cement is used to both repair and install asphalt roofing shingles. It can be used when building the original roof or to fill cracks that occur over time. The substance is also used to patch torn shingles and attach repair materials to the roof.

    Benefits

    • Roofing cement creates a waterproof seal and is a strong adhesive. It can therefore create a strong bond between shingles and the roof, and it can prevent leaks from small holes and tears.

    Application

    • Roofing cement is sold in tub-like containers and tubes. It is applied using a caulking gun, putty knife or trowel. Depending on the job, it may be easier to use roof cement that can be applied in a thin stream, such as through a caulking gun. To secure a large piece, such as an asphalt shingle to a roof, using a putty knife to slather cement on the area may work best.

    Roof Installation

    • When installing roof shingles, roof cement is applied to hold shingles in place. It also provides a seal around skylights, vent pipes and chimneys. Exposed roof nails should also be covered with roof cement to prevent leaks and secure the nail.

    Roof Repair

    • Roof cement is an important element in repairing torn asphalt shingles. The shingle is repaired by prying it up from the roof, placing a few dollops of roof cement under the shingle and placing a piece of aluminum or copper flashing between the roof and the shingle. Placing a few more dollops of roof cement on top of the flashing and securing the shingle to the flashing at the point of the cement finishes the job.
