How to Install a Drip Edge on a House Without Eaves

The lower edge of your roof normally extends beyond the fascia board funneling water into the gutters. If your house does not have gutters or eaves, install a vented drip edge. Without the drip edge, your house is susceptible to rotted roof sheathing, stained siding and possibly soil erosion leading to a damaged or flooded basement. The vented drip edge is available in a variety of colors matching your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a shingle underlay. Insert the edge underneath the layer of shingles closest to the house’s edge. The underlay should easily slide underneath the shingles and extend approximately 3 inches over the house’s edge.

    • 2

Secure the underlay to the house with a continuous bead of roofing cement along the underlay’s top. Press down on the shingles. Secure the underlay’s ends by nailing roofing nails into the overlay underneath the shingles.

    • 3

Install the 2-inch fascia wrap underneath the shingle underlay. Position the vented wrap in the place of a gutter or eave. Secure the ends of the wrap under the entire length of shingle underlay using roofing nails and a hammer.

Ensure that the shingle underlay extends approximately one-half inch over the fascia wrap.
