Originally introduced in the 1930s, the product is glazed and sealed to protect it from water and wind damage. However, after time the sealant begins to degrade and flake off, requiring a reapplication. Instead of hiring a professional to recoat your fiberglass window panels, perform this home improvement repair for a fraction of the cost.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any existing peeling, broken or faded sealant with a plastic or metal hand scraper. Hold the scraper at a 45-degree angle and work it over the fiberglass panels to remove the damaged coating only. Leave any sealant still in good shape and recoat it with new product.

    • 2

Create a mixture of 1/4 cup powdered oxygen bleach and 1 gallon warm water. Mix the ingredients until the oxygen bleach is dissolved. Dampen a mop with the cleaning mixture and wipe down the fiberglass to remove any dirt, grime or stains.

    • 3

Rinse the mop thoroughly before using it to rinse away the soapy mixture. Allow the fiberglass roof to dry completely before continuing.

    • 4

Stir the fiberglass roof sealant thoroughly with a wooden stirring rod and apply it using even, back and forth strokes with a 2-inch wide natural-bristled paintbrush. Overlap the brushstrokes slightly to ensure the entire surface is sealed properly.

    • 5

Continue to apply the sealant until the enter roof is covered. Allow the first layer of sealant to dry for at least 24 hours before applying a second coat in the same fashion. The final coat will dry completely within one to two days.
