Most roof and wall sealant products fall under the heading of elastomeric coatings, liquid rubberized substances that expand and contract with the heat and cold. The coatings contain white pigment that reflects rather than absorbs heat, making them a good choice for areas that experience long hot summers. Many products can be used over existing tile or metal roofs or used instead of a traditional roof that requires costly removal and replacement. These products are made of acrylic, rubber or a combination of both, and provide up to 500 percent elasticity, good adhesion and water resistance. These coatings keep roofs cooler and adhere more effectively to surfaces that are traditionally difficult to coat, such as galvanized metal, asphalt, concrete, and wood affected by temperature extremes.
The benefits of applying sealants to roof tiles include minimizing the effects of prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and water damage that can lead to puddling on flat roofs, encouraging the growth of molds and moss. Over time, roof tiles dry and pull away from each other, inviting moisture that saturates the tiles and seeps between them, placing an extra load on framework and staining ceilings. Roof coating creates an impenetrable barrier against weather elements, and wall coatings create a more energy-efficient environment by keeping cold air out in the winter and hot air out in the summer.
Ceramic wall coatings, have been in use for nearly 20 years and prevent heat loss or gain through exterior walls. It can be sprayed or rolled onto walls, and unlike other types of insulation that carry an R-rating, ceramic wall coating is rated according to how well it reflects or retains heat. Rather than slowing the rate at which heat moves through a wall, ceramic coating prevents it from entering altogether.
Ceramic coatings can be applied to roofs and the exterior and interior walls of buildings. Rubberized wall coatings can be used on brick, concrete, pretreated plywood, drywall, sheetrock, plastic or sheet metal, and are used to protect interior or exterior surfaces that are exposed to the cold or to wet weather. Elastomeric liquid rubber coatings provide a completely waterproof seal to below-grade foundations, basement walls or any building surface affected by extreme dampness. Rubberized coatings also help to bind construction materials together, creating a stronger, tighter bond.
