How to Repair the Membrane of a Dicor EPDM Rubber Roof

Known for their versatility and longevity, EPDM rubber membranes are common on recreational vehicle roofs. EPDM or ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber roofing resists ultraviolet rays and withstands harsh weather conditions. Although EPDM rubber is considerably durable, sharp objects such as low-hanging tree branches can puncture and tear it. Damaged EPDM rubber roofs are subject to leaks, which may cause water damage to RV interiors. Fortunately, Dicor Corporation designs convenient patching products for repairing damaged EPDM rubber roofs.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the damaged section of the EPDM roof with a garden hose. Blast loose grime off the area.

    • 2

Spray rubber roof cleaner onto the damaged region. Using a nonabrasive sponge, scrub the saturated rubber in circular motions to remove remaining grime. Wear disposable gloves while cleaning the torn or punctured area.

    • 3

Let the wet rubber surface air-dry for 24 hours.

    • 4

Measure the damaged area to decide the appropriate size for the peel-and-stick EPDM rubber roof repair membrane. Using scissors, cut the repair membrane so that it overlaps the torn or punctured area by 2 inches on all sides.

    • 5

Peel the clear protective layer off the adhesive side of the peel-and-stick membrane. Lay the adhesive side of membrane face down on the punctured or torn EPDM rubber.

    • 6

Smooth the membrane patch with a hand roller. Apply slight pressure to the roller to flatten the membrane as much as possible.

    • 7

Peel the beige-colored protective layer off the membrane patch.

    • 8

Cover all four edges of the patch with a bead of lap sealant using a caulking gun. Let the lap sealant cure for 48 hours. Wear safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves when using the sealant.
