Use a ladder or scaffolding to access the roof. Inspect the roof, removing any damaged, warped or buckled shingles. Drive in any protruding nails to create the flattest, most even surface possible.
Start at the edge of the roof and place the first row of shingles, arranging them so the unnotched edge sits flush with the roof edge.
Install three nails near the edge of the shingle on the side that sits opposite the roof edge to hold it securely into place.
Align shingles side by side and secure as previously done until the first row is complete.
Install subsequent rows, placing shingles with the center over the edge of the shingle in the previous row. Staggering shingles provides the most amount of protection.
Trim end shingles to fit correctly, using a utility knife with a hook blade to remove any overhang on the end shingle in each row.
Cut shingles into thirds, using the utility knife, for placement on the roof ridge. Center a cut piece over the ridge so the edge hangs over. Secure the shingle into place with one nail on each side. Half of each shingle must overlap the previous piece. Remove any overhang with the utility knife at the end.
