How Much Adhesive to Use on Rubber Roofing

Using the right amount of adhesive on a rubber roof is vital to how long the roofing lasts and whether it looks professional or not. This type of roofing material is suitable for roofs that have low slopes or are flat, as in a recreational vehicle. Installing the rubber roof is no more difficult than installing other types of roofs, and it provides a durable surface for the structure.
  1. Rubber Roof Benefits

    • When installed correctly, rubber roofs are lightweight, durable and relatively uncomplicated to apply. Another name for this material is EPDM, or ethylene propylene diene monomer, according to the "Journal of Light Construction." Most problems with rubber roofing are caused by improper installation. EPDM is highly resistant to ultraviolet rays, therefore it often lasts many decades.

Weather Conditions Necessary for Installing Rubber Roofs

    • Schedule the roofing project on a day when no rain is in the forecast. It is important to finish the job to prevent water seeping into the structure -- the plywood and insulation beneath it -- if inclement weather occurs. The temperature should not dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold temperatures often cause the adhesive to bond poorly, thus decreasing the life and effectiveness of the rubber roof.

Where to Buy Adhesive and Other Materials

    • A roofing supply company typically has different types of thin rubber membranes available to cover roofs. They come in various thicknesses and widths. Some rolls of rubber roofing material are as long as 200 feet and as wide as 50 feet. The roofing supply company also has the special adhesive formulated for use with the EPDM material. Hardware and home supply stores often carry the paint rollers, stiff bristle brooms and other standard tools necessary for proper installation.

    Preparation for the Adhesive

    • Stripping the existing roof is necessary to properly install the EPDM. Apply polyisocyanurate insulation board over the bare roof. This is a type of insulation that is covered with felt. It is attached with metal fasteners and screws. Roll out the rubber roofing, making sure to straighten any wrinkles or creases. Roll it back up to apply the adhesive. Spread the special EPDM adhesive over the insulation board with paint rollers. Provide an even application that does not leave bare spots or unnecessary puddles. Wait approximately 15 minutes for the adhesive to become tacky to the touch.

Roll the rubber roofing membrane carefully over the adhesive. Use a stiff bristle broom to go over the rubber membrane. This smooths any wrinkles that occur in the thin rubber membrane and also helps the adhesive bond to the material. Continue covering the roof in this manner until it the project is complete. Use seam tape to seal and waterproof any seams.
