How to Repair Roof Flashing Against a Brick Wall

Where a roof adjoins a brick wall, a seam between the roof and the wall is naturally created. This seam serves as a point through where water enters. Thin strips of metal called flashing cover the seam. Flashing installed onto the roof and along the wall’s bottom is called step flashing. Step flashing is rarely sufficient by itself because a seam still exists between the flashing and the wall. Counterflashing is installed against the wall and covers step flashing. The process of repairing the flashing depends on which type is damaged.

Instructions

  1. Step-Flashing Repair

    • 1

Bend the counterflashing covering the damaged step flashing up, exposing the step flashing’s vertical side.

    • 2

Pull back any shingles covering the step flashing’s horizontal side.

    • 3

Pry the step flashing away from the roof and wall with a pry bar. If the step flashing is secured to the roof with nails, pry the nails out of the flashing before prying the flashing off the roof.

    • 4

Cut a new step-flashing piece with metal shears. Use the old flashing piece as a template.

    • 5

Apply roofing cement with a caulking gun to the bottom of both sides of the new flashing piece.

    • 6

Press the flashing onto the roof and against the brick.

    • 7

Apply roofing cement over the flashing’s edges.

    • 8

Lower any roofing shingles onto the step flashing’s horizontal side.

    • 9

Bend the counterflashing within the wall over the step flashing’s vertical side.

    Counterflashing Repair

    • 10

Chip away the mortar from the joint between the bricks with a chisel. Driving the chisel into the mortar joint with a hammer removes the mortar.

    • 11

Pull the counterflashing out of the mortar joint.

    • 12

Cut a new counterflashing piece with metal shears. Use the old flashing piece as a template.

    • 13

Insert the new flashing piece into the mortar joint within the wall.

    • 14

Fill the mortar joint with premixed mortar using a caulking gun.
