How to Install a Shingle Roof on a Single Wide Mobile Home

Shingling the roof of a mobile will help protect it from weather and also give it an attractive and permanent appearance when viewed from the side or above. This job can be done in a much shorter time by a team, but the project timeframe will ultimately depend on the size of the roof to be shingled. This job requires basic tools and the ability to perform on top of the roof with confidence despite the risk involved.

Instructions

    • 1

Climb onto the roof and lay out roofing paper in horizontal strips, beginning at the bottom of the roofline. Staple it in place with a vertical column of three staples every 3 feet. Cut the paper off at the end of the roof and layer the next strip of roofing paper higher up on the roof, overlapping the first layer by 6 inches. Continue in this manner until the entire roof is papered.

    • 2

Cut the tabs off regular shingles to make starter shingles. Line these up horizontally with the bottom of the roof line so they stick out about 1/8 inch off the roof on the sides and the bottom. Place the tar strip of the shingle on the top edge and nail them in place with roofing nails, spacing the roofing nails every foot on the shingle. Cut the final starter shingle as needed to make it fit on the roof.

    • 3

Set a full shingle above the starter shingle with the tabs pointing down. Let the shingle stick off the roof the same distance as the starter shingle. Line the bottom of the new shingle up 5 1/8 inches from the bottom of the starter shingle. Nail it in place just like the starter shingles, with the nails in the top section of the shingle. Attach the rest of the shingles in the row in the same manner, cutting the final shingle to fit as needed.

    • 4

Cut 6 inches off a regular shingle and save the 6-inch piece. Use the larger part as the starter for the next row of shingles, lining it up with the edge of the roof and 5 1/8 inches from the bottom of the previous row. Install it in the same manner as the previous shingles.

    • 5

Start each new row with a shingle 6 inches shorter until the last starter is only about 6 inches. Begin again with a full shingle on the next row and then repeat the process, reusing the cut pieces when possible. Finish the roof with this process.

Cut a series of shingles into thirds along the flap lines. Attach these shingles at the top of the roofline perpendicular to the rest of the shingles but overlapping in the same manner, as most single wide mobile homes will not have a roof vent at the top here as standard home roofs do.
