How to Replace a Roof Peek Cap

A roof peak cap, which covers the top of a roof, where the roof sides meet and form angles, is different from a normal shingle. It covers all sides of the roof and has a rounded top. If a roof peak cap is old or broken, the roof might leak or shingles around the cap might come loose. Replacing the roof peak cap fixes those problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Position a ladder against the side of your home, and have a helper hold the ladder while you use it to climb onto the roof. Attach the ladder to the roof with rope so it won’t fall. Exercise caution when walking and working on the roof.

    • 2

Remove the old roof peak cap from the roof with the prying side of a claw hammer.

    • 3

Fit a new roof peak cap over the top of the roof. Make it hang over the shingles below it by at least 1/2 inch.

    • 4

Nail the new roof peak cap to the roof with four to six roofing nails on all sides of the cap.
