How to Fasten Edges that Roll With Roofing Nails

Rolled roofing is a less expensive option as a roofing material than shingle. One of the downsides of rolled roofing is that occasionally the edges will roll up near the eaves of the roof. Strong winds and wet weather cause the edges to come loose and roll away from the roof. Fastening edges that roll with roofing nails still requires using lap cement to help hold the edges in place. Lap cement is available at home improvement centers.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the roof to warm in the sun before attempting to secure the edges. Depending upon the location of the rolled edges, it is a good idea to wait until early to mid-afternoon. The heat from the sun softens the edges, which helps prevent them from cracking or splitting when reattaching to the roof.

    • 2

Heat the rolled up edges with a heat gun if the roof does not get enough sun. Position a ladder under the area of the repair, and ask someone to hold the bottom of the ladder while you are working.

    • 3

Brush the area under the rolled edges with a stiff brush. This removes dirt and debris for better adhesion.

    • 4

Use a trowel to apply lap cement to the roof where the rolled edges will fasten. The lap cement acts as a seal as well as an adhesive.

    • 5

Press the rolled edges onto the roof over the cement. Drive roofing nails along the edge with a hammer, spacing the nails 6-inches apart along the entire length of the edge.
