How to Figure Out the Angle of My Gabled Roof

A gabled roof is one of the most common and basic roof designs. In a gable roof, the two sides of the roof rise evenly on both sides to come to a peak in the middle, so the roof looks like an isosceles triangle. At some point, you may need to measure the pitch, or slope, of your gable roof for maintenance or additions.

Instructions

    • 1

Brace your ladder against the roof carefully and climb up to the peak.

    • 2

Place the 12-inch marking of the carpenter's square next to the peak so it measures out horizontally, with the other leg extending down to meet the slope of the roof.

    • 3

Note the measurement where the square meets the roof slope.

    • 4

Express this number as a ratio of 12. For example, if the slope of the roof is three inches below the peak at 12 inches, the pitch is 3:12.

    • 5

Convert this pitch to an angle measurement by entering "sin^-1(0.25)" into your scientific calculator.
