DIY: Pipe Penetration in a Corrugated Roof

Corrugated sheets are used as a temporary roofing option or as a roofing material for sheds, garages and carports. These are lightweight sheets made with a woven convex-concave texture. This material is often used because it's inexpensive and easy to install. A corrugated sheet is usually made out of plastic or a flexible tin-aluminum combination. Because of the raw materials used, it's a somewhat flexible material and only about 2.8 millimeters thick, making it easy to cut through with any wood saw. However, to cut a perfectly round hole in the corrugated roof, you need to use a specialized hole cutting tool, as a regular saw will leave jagged edges and make an uneven circle.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect and measure the pipe you will insert through the hole in the corrugated roof. Decide on the size hole you need.

    • 2

Purchase a hole saw that fits on your hand drill. Choose the size that will make a hole the size you need for the pipe. This size is dependent on your pipe diameter. Hole saws come in different sizes starting at approximately 3/8 inch to 24 inches in diameter.

    • 3

Inspect the roof area on the inside of the room or building structure to see where you will place the hole. Mark the center of the hole with a grease pencil.

    • 4

Attach the hole saw bit to the hand drill and tighten in place with the drill chuck that comes with the drill.

    • 5

Place the drill over your centered mark and pull the drill trigger to start drilling the hole. Place your other hand on the drill back and push as it cuts through the material.

    • 6

Remove any debris from around the hole. Sand any rough edges around the hole using 80 to 120 grit sandpaper.

    • 7

Insert the pipe through the roof hole. Attach the pipe to the stove, wall or appliance.

    • 8

Inspect the exterior roof pipe penetration. Carefully apply silicone caulk around the hole rim and pipe area to seal the hole and prevent water from seeping through. Apply the caulk to the inside hole rim and pipe in the same way to further seal the hole.
