How to Tie the Roof Truss to a Beam

The relationship of a roof truss to a beam can take a number of different forms depending on how these two components have been used together in the construction of a building. A roof truss is a triangular construction made up of multiple 2-by-4s that supports the roof. A beam may run down the center of a ceiling and support the roof trusses from below, or a pair of beams, also known as top plates, may support both the trusses and the ends of the ceiling joists on each side of a gable roof.

Instructions

    • 1

Screw one end of a metal band to the side of the beam using two 2 1/2-inch-long screws. The bands are used for many purposes, including reinforcing the connection of a roof to a wall.

    • 2

Feed the band up over the lower component of the roof truss that is resting on the beam. Pass the metal band over the roof truss and back down to the other side of the beam.

    • 3

Pull the band tight and screw it onto the side of the beam with two 2 1/2 inch screws. The bottom of the truss is now held to the beam by a metal band that passes over the bottom section of the truss and is screwed to the beam on both sides.
