Sweep twigs, dust, leaves and other loose material off the roof using a push broom. In addition, spray the entire roof with water to provide a grime-free surface for the elastomeric or aluminum coating. Let the roof dry for 24 hours.
Patch any existing leaks in the roof. Put on rubber gloves and full-length clothing for protection from the rubberized roof cement.
Spread rubberized roof cement over leaking portions of the roof using a trowel. Apply the cement 1/8-inch thick, extending the layer three inches beyond the leaking area.
Lay reinforcing fabric over the fresh cement layer. Press the fabric into the cement.
Spread another 1/8-inch-thick coat of rubberized roof cement over the fabric using the trowel. Extend the layer three inches beyond the leaking area.
Let the patched portions of the roof cure for 48 hours.
Ensure the temperature is above 60 degrees Fahrenheit for applying aluminum coating, or 65 degrees Fahrenheit for elastomeric coating. Stir the aluminum or elastomeric coating using a power drill with a mixing blade. Pour some coating into a paint tray.
Coat all the edges of the roof with the aluminum or elastomeric coating using a 3/4-inch nap roller. Make one pass with the coating along the edges of the roof.
Apply the coating around projections such as chimney pipes and skylights, using a paintbrush. Extend the coating about three inches beyond the projections.
Fill in the expanse of exposed roofing with aluminum or elastomeric coating using a nap roller. Apply the coating in even passes back and forth over the roof until the entire surface is coated.
Metal roofs require 1 gallon aluminum coating per 75 square feet, or 1 gallon of elastomeric coating per 80 to 100 square feet. All other roofing materials require 1 gallon of aluminum coating per 50 square feet or 1 gallon of elastomeric coating per 50 to 75 square feet.
Let the coated roof, regardless of the coating, cure for 72 hours.
Apply the second layer of aluminum or elastomeric coating to the roof. Use the previous coating application techniques.
Let the second coating cure on the roof for 72 hours.
