How to Measure Corrugated Metal Roofing

Cutting metal roofing is one of the more unpleasant parts of roofing your house in metal. It's noisy and somewhat dangerous, so you will want to minimize the number of cuts you have to make by determining your roofing needs accurately. When you have all the measurements of your roof, you can either buy pre-manufactured corrugated roofing and cut it to your required lengths, or spend a bit more money and buy pieces that are ready to fit.

Instructions

    • 1

Hook the end of the measuring tape over one end of a piece of corrugated metal roofing. Stretch the tape out along the length of the roofing to the other end. Read the number on the tape that corresponds with the other end of the roofing. Write down the number on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Hook the end of the measuring tape onto the side of a piece of corrugated metal roofing. Stretch the tape across the width of the roofing. Read the number that corresponds with the other side of the sheet of roofing and write down the number.

    • 3

Measure all of the dimensions on your roof, including the lengths of each section of eaves, the lengths of hip rafters if you have any, the lengths of gable ends and the lengths of ridges. Use these measurements to determine your roofing needs, based on the sizes of the corrugated metal roofing that you measured in Steps 1 and 2.

Make the process of estimation easier by creating scale drawings of each section of your roof, then making representations of corrugated metal roofing to the same scale out of pieces of paper that you cut out with scissors. You can then move the paper roofing pieces around on the picture of your roof to figure out the most efficient way of applying the corrugated metal roofing.
