How to Calculate the Specific Size of a Gambrel Roof

Replacing a roof is one of the biggest maintenance tasks that a homeowner can face, with a cost of tens of thousands of dollars. With the amount of money involved, budgeting for the labor and materials needed is important. You can make a rough estimate of the materials cost by calculating the size of your roof. This is fairly easy if you have a gambrel roof, which usually consists of four rectangular sections angled on the sides.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and height of the first section of the gambrel roof, from the bottom edge of the roof to the point where the slope of the roof changes.

    • 2

Multiply the measurements noted in Step 1 to determine the area of the roof section.

    • 3

Measure the length and height from the top of the first section to the peak of the roof then multiply them together to determine the surface area of that section.

    • 4

Add the square footage of the two roof sections together then double the sum to calculate the surface area of the entire roof as a gambrel roof has the same dimensions on both sides.
