How to Fasten the Bottom Edge Roll with Roofing Nails

Roll roofing is the common name for several types of asphalt roll products that are often used to cover flat residential roofs, barns and sheds. Whether the type of roll roofing you are using is smooth, mineral, saturated felt or specialty eaves, you will need to secure the bottom of the edge roll. You can accomplish this task with galvanized roofing nails and a hammer, along with a few important safety techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Smooth out the bottom edge of the roll roofing with your hands. Make sure that there aren’t any places where there are puckers or folds in the sheet.

    • 2

Nail down the roofing at either the right or left edge at the very end of the roll. Use galvanized roofing nails, which should extend into the sheathing at least 3/4 of an inch.

    • 3

Nail the bottom edge of the sheet with a galvanized roofing nail each additional 3 inches until you’ve reached the opposite side of the roof.

    • 4

Trim the bottom edge with a utility knife so that the edge is completely flush with the layer just above the bottom edge.
