Place an extension ladder against the wall and climb to the roof. Remove the old roofing from the roof deck, using a shovel. There may be two or more layers on the decking, so it may take some effort. Remove any nails from the roof deck using a claw hammer or crowbar. Turn on the tar pot while you are removing the old roof.
Inspect the roof sheathing for dry rot or other damage. If you find any damage, repair it as needed before installing the new roof. Apply a layer of asphalt primer to the roof and allow it to dry for one hour. Install the drip edge around the edges of the roof and nail it into place using a hammer and roofing nails.
Install a layer of roll roofing, starting at the lowest point of the roof. Secure the roofing using a hammer and roofing nails. When you lay the roofing down, make sure the adhesive side is down. Start a new row of roofing paper. Make sure the new sheet overlaps the first sheet by at least 2 inches. Repeat the process until the entire roof is covered.
Open the valve on the tar pot and fill a steel bucket with hot tar. Take the bucket up on the roof. Dip the mop into the hot tar and coat the roof as if you were mopping a floor. Start from the furthest end, and work your way back to the ladder. Continue until you coat the entire roof with hot tar.
