How to Install a Peel & Stick Flat Roof

Various manufacturers produce peel-and-stick products that use a self-adhesive system suitable for a flat roof. Typically, this type of rolled roofing material consists of modified bitumen with an overlying layer of aluminum. Marketed as rubberized asphalt, the product installs faster than traditional asphalt rolled roofing because you don't need a nailing procedure to fasten the roofing to the deck. Successful installation of peel-and-stick roofing relies upon preparing the roof deck so that the adhesive forms a strong bond that keeps the roofing in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the roof deck with a push broom to remove leaves, loose debris and dust. Wash dirt marks and oil stains from the deck with a scrubbing brush and soapy water.

    • 2

Wipe the roof deck with a damp cloth to remove any residual detergent. Allow the roof to dry.

    • 3

Use a paint roller to apply an asphalt primer over a wooden or porous roof deck. Allow the primer to dry.

    • 4

Align the length of peel-and-stick roofing to the lowest edge of your flat roof. Peel 3 inches of backing paper from the underside of the roofing material. Press the first 3 inches of peel-and-stick roofing onto the roof deck aligned with the lowest edge and side edge of the roof.

    • 5

Continue to peel off the backing while you press the roofing onto the deck. Use a smoothing action with your hand to adhere the roofing and prevent wrinkles in the material.

    • 6

Install each additional roofing length across the roof from side-to-side and working up the roof. Overlap the uppermost edge of each installed roofing length by 3 inches with the next length of roofing. Use a hand roller to apply firm pressure along and across all overlapping seams.
