How to Frame an Eave on a Hip Roof

The eaves of a hip roof are as same as those on a gable roof along the sides, but differ on the ends because the eaves of a gable roof rise up to a point in front of a vertical wall, and the eaves of a hip roof continue horizontally along the bottom of a slanted roof. A hip roof consists of four slanting planes meeting at a point or a ridge, and the eaves are continuous around the perimeter.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance from corner to corner along one side of the hip roof. Hook the measuring tape over the end of one of the hip rafters and extend it to the outside face of the end of the other hip rafter.

    • 2

Measure the vertical width of the ends of the rafters along the eave. You will need a board this width or slightly wider to use for the fascia on the eaves. Cut this board to the measurement that you took in step 1.

    • 3

Hold the board up to the rafter ends so that the ends of the board are flush with the outside faces of the ends of the hip rafters. Nail the board into the ends of the rafters using two nails for each rafter.

    • 4

Measure the horizontal distance from the wall to the inside face of the fascia that you just nailed up. This measurement is the width that you will need for your soffit. Cut a board of this width to a length equal to the fascia.

    • 5

Nail the board that you cut in step 4 onto the underside of the rafters so that it covers the space between the house wall and the inside face of the fascia.

    • 6

Repeat steps 1 through 5 for the other three sides of the roof.
