How to Enclose With a Soffit

The majority of homeowners do not realize the importance of a building's eaves. The eaves are the overhanging portion of the roof that extends past the home's side walls. Most eaves are open to the weather elements, which can subject the material to possible rotting and structural damage. Enclosing the eaves with protective paneling, called soffits, can extend the life of the roofing wood.
  1. Channels

    • The first step to enclosing the eaves with soffits is installing the supportive channels for the paneling. An "F" channel should be installed at every 12-inch length against the building's wall. The channel should be oriented so that the "F" shape is upside down; the long leg of the "F" is nailed into the building while the two small protrusions will hold the soffit paneling. In addition, "J" channels should be installed on the overhanging roof portion. The "J" shape should be sideways and facing the building to hold the soffit paneling.

    Choose Soffit Material

    • Manufacturers make soffit paneling from many different materials. Metal and wood are two enclosure choices, but vinyl is considered the most common. Vinyl is extremely durable and does not require much maintenance, such as painting. Additionally, the soffit paneling can have vented portions or have a completely solid surface. Ventilation may help keep inside home temperatures mild during the cold and hot seasons.

    Placing the Paneling

    • During the enclosure process, it may be necessary to slightly bend the paneling to fit into the opposing channels. Each panel should be nailed to the building and the edge of the roof overhang. Additionally, there should not be any spaces between panels; the enclosure should be seamless across the entire underside of the eave.

    Considerations

    • The nails should not be installed too tightly. The paneling needs room to expand and contract with the outside temperature differences. It is also good practice to inspect the roof's overhang for any structural damage, such as from termite infestations. Nailing the soffit paneling to a damaged overhang can result in a loose enclosure that can easily fall to the ground.
