How to Install a Carlisle EPDM Membrane Roof

Carlisle SynTec EPDM, or ethylene propylene diene monomer (M-class), rubber roofing kits provide a long-lasting, durable and weather-resistant alternative to other traditional roofing materials, including tiles or asphalt shingles. The product is ideal for installation on low-slope or flat roofs, as the use of the aforementioned traditional roofing materials isn’t recommended on slopes less than 2 inches. Use the correct tools and procedures to successfully install your Carlisle SynTec EPDM rubber roofing system.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any loose dirt, dust or debris from the roof, using the push broom. It’s crucial the naked roof is free of any loose particles, as they can damage the EPDM roofing material or cause the adhesive to cure improperly.

    • 2

Measure the roof to determine the amount of roofing material required. Standard Carlisle SynTec roofing material is available in 10-foot rolls. Pre-cut the rolls according to the roof’s dimension, using the utility knife.

    • 3

Lay the first sheet of EPDM rubber membrane on the roof and fold it in half lengthwise. Apply a thin layer of EPDM roofing adhesive to the top half of the membrane with the nap roller.

    • 4

Spread a thin layer of Carlisle EPDM adhesive over the roofing material with a nap roller to the roofing where the folded piece will lay. Allow both pieces to dry to the touch before unfolding the EPDM membrane and pressing it against the adhesive-covered roof section.

    • 5

Work the push broom over the installed roofing material to remove any wrinkles or air bubbles. Repeat the process of folding the rubber roofing pieces and applying the EPDM adhesive to the folded membrane and exposed roof until the entire surface is covered.

    • 6

Examine the seams and remove any excess EPDM adhesive, using a rag soaked in denatured alcohol.

    • 7

Run a bead of silicone caulk around the edges of the roof to create a watertight seal.
