Adding a Gutter Overhang

The overhang on the roof, which is the section of the roof that is past the wall, is where the gutter is attached to collect the rain water. The gutter and overhang divert the rain from the edge of the house where the constant flow of water could damage your house foundation and lawn by erosion. Keeping the gutters clean is the most important part of maintaining them, but they must be installed correctly to perform their function properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Set an extension ladder against the roof a foot from the corner of the overhang.

    • 2

Measure the perimeter of the overhang using a tape measure. Use this number to determine the quantity of gutter needed.

    • 3

Install a gutter outlet two inches from the first corner of the overhang using a cordless drill and 1-inch wood screws. An outlet is the circular end gutter that has a hole in the bottom for the downpipe, which is the pipe that carries the rainwater to the bucket or drain.

    • 4

Drill 1-inch wood screws into the two holes on the top and two holes on the bottom of gutter brackets, placing them along the edge of the overhang every 30 inches. Start the first bracket 1/2-inch from the edge of the overhang. The brackets have a U-shaped holder with snaps on each end where the gutter snaps into the bracket.

    • 5

Insert 32-inch sections of gutter pipe on the brackets. The gutter pipe is also U-shaped to the same dimension as the brackets. One end of the gutter pipe sits inside the edge of each bracket one inch, leaving a 1-inch space for the connecting gutter pipe. The bracket clamps down on the gutter with the 1-inch snapping strip on both sides of the bracket.

    • 6

Drill 1-inch wood screws into an L-shaped gutter pipe at the corners of the overhang, in places where the slope of the roof causes rain runoff. An L-shaped gutter pipe directs the runoff into the gutters and down through the outlet. These pipes attach directly to the overhang through built-in brackets on the bottom.
