How to Cover a Gravel Roof With Metal Roofing

Metal roofing offers homeowners a durable and low-maintenance material for their homes. Metal roofing is simple enough to be installed by do-it-yourselfers and provide an attractive appearance that will modernize the exterior of your home. Another advantage of metal roofs is that they can be used to cover other types of roofing materials, such as built-up, composition or tar-and-gravel roofs. A few preliminary steps must be taken to ensure that a proper surface is available for the installation of the panels.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep loose gravel off the roof with a broom. Do this early in the day while the roof is still cool and the gravel is easily dislodged from the surface.

    • 2

Examine the remaining roofing for signs of deterioration or water intrusion. Repair damaged areas of the roof deck if necessary before installing metal roofing material.

    • 3

Lay out synthetic roofing underlyament as the waterproof base for the metal panels, overlapping the edges of the strips 6 inches to prevent water intrusion. Nail the material into place with a hammer at 4-inch intervals in staggered rows.

    • 4

Attach the drip edge material along the edges of the roof on top of the underlayment using screws or galvanized nails as recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 5

Begin installation of panels at the end of the building that is away from prevailing wind and rain. This method allows you to set the lap seams so that the wind and rain flows over the panels not into them, according to the Metal Roofing Wholesalers website. Ensure that the first panel is installed square so that following panels are also square. Install fasteners as recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 6

Continue over the surface of the roof, cutting the panels to fit along edges, valleys and protuberances through the roof.

    • 7

Install a cap panel along the ridge of the roof, ensuring that it overlaps the edges of the panels that meet from both side surfaces of the roof. Screw down securely with recommended fasteners.
