How to Hang Metal Fascia on Mitered Corners

Fascia refers to the horizontal board fastened on edge to the end of the roof rafter tails on your building. The fascia, in combination with the soffit -- the panels mounted horizontally to the underside of the roof overhang -- boxes in and trims the roof overhang. Instead of leaving the fascia bare wood that must be painted, metal trim panels are available to cover the fascia board. Hanging and fastening metal fascia pieces on straight fascia boards is not much of a problem, but when you reach an inside or outside mitered corner, some cutting and bending of the fascia trim is needed.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from the bottom surface of the soffit panels mounted on your roof overhang to the upper side of the rain drip edge installed on the upper part of the fascia board. Subtract 1/8 inch from this measurement to get the width of metal fascia trim needed.

    • 2

Transfer the measurement obtained previously to the width of a length of metal fascia trim. Measure from the bottom lip -- which is located at the 90-degree bend -- to the upper flat side of the trim and make a mark. Cut the fascia trim to width with a pair of tin snips.

    • 3

Measure in 1 inch from the end of the metal fascia trim that will be mounted on the corner. Make a pencil mark across the entire width of the piece, including the 90-degree lip.

    • 4

Make a cut with tin snips across the 90-degree bend in the fascia to the pencil mark. Make another cut along the pencil line on the lip. Remove the small waste portion and discard it.

    • 5

Place the metal fascia trim on a firm surface face-up. Place a metal straightedge along the pencil line on the fascia trim and press down with one hand. Bend the 1-inch section of the fascia 90 degrees with the other hand to make a tab. Bend the tab downwards 90-degrees for an outside corner. Bend the tab upward 90-degrees for an inside corner. Remove the straightedge.

    • 6

Hold the bent piece of metal fascia trim to the inside or outside corner of the fascia board. Slide the trim upward so that the upper flat edge slides under the roof drip edge. Ensure the bent tab fits snug in the inside or outside corner. Drive aluminum trim nails through the lip of the fascia and into the fascia board.

Trim to width another piece of metal fascia trim. Position and slide the trim to the adjacent fascia board at the corner you are working on. Ensure the end of the fascia trim overlaps the tab on the previous piece. Nail the trim into place in the same manner.
