How to Remove a Rafter

Rafters are support elements that run beneath the roof of your home providing shape and structure to the roofing surface. Rafters can crack with pressure or impact, and can rot or collapse due to moisture or insects. When a rafter has gone bad, it can and should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent the roof from becoming weak or altogether unsalvageable. The process of removing a rafter requires some strong DIY skills and a few basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the rafter into pieces so that it can be more easily removed from its installation location against the underside of the roofing surface and above the joists. Use a reciprocating saw to slice the rafter into sections around its anchor points. Remove the loose portions of the rafter by hand.

    • 2

Remove the parts of the rafter that remain attached to the roofing surface above and the joists below by striking them with a small sledgehammer until they loosen.

    • 3

Insert one end of your crowbar and pry the rafter pieces away, starting at the top end of the rafter and working your way down to the joists. Pull each piece away from the anchor points until it is free, and discard it.

    • 4

Install a new rafter using the same size lumber. Measure and cut the lumber to fit the space vacated by your old rafter, and use your hammer and galvanized roofing nails to fasten it in place against the underside of the roofing surface and the joists at the bottom end. Reattach any vertical support pieces that held the old rafter in place.
