How to Properly Insulate Roof Eaves

Properly insulated roof eaves can help reduce energy bills and increase comfort in the home. Eaves left exposed on the outside are vulnerable to extreme heat during the summer and extreme cold in the winter. To properly insulate eaves, you must ensure that vents along their underside are clear and able to ventilate the attic effectively. Provide a 1-inch gap between the ceiling at the eaves and insulation for improved air flow.

Things You'll Need

  • Plywood sheet
  • Rafter vents
  • Staple gun and 1/2-inch staples
  • Insulation batts or blow insulation

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a large sheet of plywood over the attic floor joists so you can stand and easily install the insulation without falling. Reposition the plywood as you work along the ceiling.

    • 2

Hold a rafter vent flush against the ceiling between the rafters. This vent prevents the insulation from impeding the flow of air from the soffits. Position the rafter vent so both its side edges fall flat against the ceiling. Provide a 1/2-inch gap between the center of the vent and the ceiling. Staple the vent edges to the roofing deck. Space the staples 6 to 8 inches apart.

    • 3

Continue to attach more rafter vents between the rafters where you wish to insulate.

    • 4

Install insulation between the attic floor joists, ensuring it extends to the eaves. For blown insulation, set a foam board in front of each vent and blow the insulation into the eaves. This practice prevents the insulation from seeping into the vents and blocking them. For batt insulation, roll it out until it falls flush against the rafter vents and insert staples through its lips on each side.
