What Is the Proper Way to Install a Drip Edge Ice & Water Barrier on a Roof?

Water and ice under the shingles leave your roof susceptible to leaking and damage which can sometimes filter down into the ceilings and walls of the home. A drip edge is a piece of metal designed with a corner that attaches along the edges of the roof. The drip edge aids in directing water off of the roof and away from the shingles where it is able to cause damage. The edge also helps avoid damage and staining to the fascia and siding of the home. The drip edge installation becomes part of the roofing project.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Roofing cement
  • Builder's felt
  • Roofing nails

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the edge of the roof to determine how much of the drip edge you need. If you have a long run, you may need two lengths of drip edges to cover the full edge.

    • 2

Position the drip edge piece on the eave edges of the roof so it hangs out far enough to reach the gutter. Nail the drip edge in place using roofing nails before you put down the builder's felt.

    • 3

Apply roofing cement along the top edge of the drip edge. Install the builder's felt, using the cement to help hold it into position.

    • 4

Nail the drip edge along the rake of the roof, which is the non-eave edge that is inclined with the roof pitch. On the rake, place the drip edge over the felt instead of under it to keep it in place.
