How to Get on Top of Your Roof

Roofs require regular maintenance to keep them in satisfactory condition. This involves performing a regular inspection to check for problems. It is not necessary to hire a professional. The job may appear daunting and scary, but you can perform the inspection yourself once you learn how to climb onto your roof. You must obtain the appropriate equipment and have someone standing close by who can assist you in case of an emergency.

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Safety line and belt

Instructions

    • 1

Stand a ladder straight up in front of you on stable ground and away from the wall at a distance that is a quarter of the length of the ladder. Lean the top section of the ladder against the edge of the roof. The top of the ladder must extend past the edge of the roof by three feet. Ensure that the rungs on the ladder are parallel to the edge of the roof.

    • 2

Place one hand on a rung on the ladder and place the other hand on the rung above. Your hands should be at a comfortable height. Place a foot on the lowest rung and place the other foot on the rung above it. Begin climbing up the ladder. Move your hands to higher rungs as you climb.

    • 3

Take a sideways step off the ladder and onto the roof when you reach the rooftop.

    • 4

Harness yourself to a sturdy object on the roof, such as a vent. This is necessary if your roof slopes at a 5/12 pitch or if it is 16 feet off the ground and you need to work within six feet of the edge. Use a safety line and a belt.

    • 5

Walk across the roof as you perform your inspection. Do not walk up and down the slope.

    • 6

Return to the ladder at the end of the inspection. Hold the ladder firmly at the section that is above the roof. Lower your feet to the rungs and begin to climb down. Place your hands on the rungs as you descend.
