DIY Liquid Roof

Liquid Roof is the brand name of an ethylene propylene diene monomer product manufactured by Pro Guard Coatings. The product works for a flat or low-pitched roof where you would normally lay a rubberized roofing product. Liquid Roof is available in black and white, so if you are using it to repair the roof of your recreational vehicle, you can match the color of the existing roof. Installing Liquid Roof requires few tools, allowing a do-it-yourselfer to complete a roofing project in a short amount of time.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Putty knife
  • Scrub brush
  • Dishwasher detergent
  • Bucket
  • 60-grit sandpaper
  • Drill and mixer attachment
  • Paintbrush
  • Roller or squeegee
  • Short nap roller

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the roof carefully for loose nails or screws. Drive screws or nails below the surface, if possible, to create as smooth a surface as possible. Scrape off any loose coatings with a putty knife.

    • 2

Rinse the roof with a garden hose. Scrub off any oil by mixing a few drops of dishwasher detergent into a bucket of hot water. Rinse again with clean water. Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding.

    • 3

Sand the surface lightly with 60-grit sandpaper to provide a roughened surface for the Liquid Roof to adhere to.

    • 4

Insert a mixer attachment for a drill into the container of Liquid Roof. Turn it on to a slow speed until a vortex forms in the roofing material. Gradually add the catalyst package that comes with the Liquid Roof and stir for two to three minutes.

    • 5

Apply Liquid Roof to the edge of the roof’s surface with a paintbrush, taking care to work the product into all edges, flashing and corners. Pour Liquid Roof over the remaining portion of the roof and use a roller or squeegee to spread it. Finish the entire application by going over it with a short nap roller to press out any air bubbles and to press the Liquid Roof into the roof’s structure. The product is self-leveling and you only need one thick coat.
