How to Dislodge a Toy in the Toilet

If your child enjoys splashing his toys in water, he may accidentally drop a toy in the toilet and then flush the toy down the drain. Due to the compact space of toilet drainpipes, a flushed toy can become stuck in the pipe and clog the toilet. A clogged toilet will not flush and the water level might rise. Before calling a plumber to fix your issue, take steps to see if you can dislodge the toy yourself.

Instructions

Position a plunger over the hole at the bottom of your toilet basin. Pump the plunger several times to increase the air pressure and help dislodge the toy. Remove the plunger and wait for the water to drain. Water drainage indicates that the plunger created enough pressure to push the toy farther into the drainpipe and down to the sewer line.

Insert a toilet auger into the drainpipe to dislodge the toy, if a plunger doesn't work. This tool has a crank handle and a curved bottom. Place the bottom of the auger into the drain and crank the handle to extend the cable. Continue cranking until you feel resistance.

Pull the toy out of the toilet. The toilet auger may attach or hook onto the lodged toy. Slowly extract the auger to remove the toy.

Push the lodged toy farther down the drainpipe as an alternate strategy. If the toy doesn't hook to the auger but you feel resistance, continue cranking the auger to unstick and push the toy out of the drainpipe. Remove the auger after dislodging the toy.
